So many of our dreams at first seem impossible, then they seem improbable, and then, when we summon the will, they soon become inevitable. If we can conquer outer space, we can conquer inner space, too.

Assessment

The first step in any therapeutic process must always be an accurate evaluation of the problem. When recovery from drugs or alcohol is the issue, it is critical to address the mental and emotional challenges that often sabotage comfortable sobriety. Dr. Blair has extensive experience in the diagnosis of substance abuse and dependence and other psychiatric disorders.

Counseling

Your most important question is: are you satisfied with the way things are today?

Any change being considered is almost always accompanied by fear. Now imagine not having to face the fear alone. Individual, group and couples counseling is offered as a valuable tool for both individuals and families looking for the examined and conscious life.

Relapse Prevention

Statistics tell us that the majority of those who experience sobriety will also experience relapse. That is the nature of all chronic diseases. Dr. Blair works with clients to:

  • identify and replace attitudes and behaviors that are not working.
  • address situational factors, such as work and relationships, that may be serving as triggers.
  • guard against uncomfortable sobriety and complacency (also known as "dry drunk"). Abstinence is not equal to recovery. The goal is a joyful and productive life.
  • interpret relapses as feedback rather than failure, moving through them without getting stuck in guilt and shame.

Help for the Family

Addiction isn't a spectator sport. Eventually the whole family gets to play.
     - Rebeta-Burditt

Addiction, like any brain-based disorder (eg. depression, bipolar, OCD), takes control of the whole family, leaving loved ones as confused, hurt, and desperate as the person using drugs or caught in a self-destructive cycle. Diseases that compromise the brain necessarily compromise rationale, judgment and insight, making it imperative for the family to stay committed to a solution and seek professional guidance. Left to their own energy and level of understanding, the patient's problems inevitably get worse. Dr. Blair helps the family:

  • learn how to be proactive rather than reactive.
  • energize the solution, not the problem.
  • replace misconceptions and myths with facts.
  • learn how to respond effectively to addiction behaviors, to relapse, and to recovery itself.
  • get support and guidance for themselves.
